Tattoo after care: 101

Tattoo after care: 101

After leaving the tattoo shop, taking care of your new tattoo will be your responsibility.

Tattoo aftercare is essential to ensure the healing process goes smoothly and avoid complications. Here are some key points for your tattoo aftercare in accordance with general health standards.

Keep initial bandage for at least a few hours, or as recommended by your tattoo artist.

Bandaging such as second skin is typically left on for at least 3-5 days. This helps protect the tattoo from bacteria and external contaminants.

Intial Bandaging

After removing the initial bandage, gently wash the tattooed area with fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.

Fragrance soaps or souls with essential oils can irritate the skin. Avoid drying the tattooed surface with a regular towel.

To avoid infections, pat dry with a paper towel for the following 2 weeks. Wash at least twice a day for the first two weeks, and as needed.

Washing  Tattoo

When scabbing occurs, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, hypoallergenic tattoo aftercare ointment or lotion. (Petroleum-based products are not recommended)

This helps keep the tattoo moisturized and prevents it from drying out. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your tattoo.

What to Avoid

Soaking: Avoid immersing the tattoo in water for extended periods, such as in swimming, baths, and hot tubs.

Scratching: Do not scratch, pick, or peel the tattoo, as this can lead to poor healing, infection, and scarring.

Strenuous exercise or activities: Avoid strenuous activity as excessive sweating can lead to poor healing.

Sun Exposure: Protect the tattoo from direct sunlight and tanning beds, especially during the initial healing stages. Once healed, use sunscreen with a high SPF when exposing the tattoo.

What to expect

Some clear fluid (plasma) or ink that may come from the tattoo while it is healing. This is normal for the first 7 to 10 days. Anything that deviates from this, please contact your artist.

Swelling at the tattoo sight may happen. This is expected for the first 7 to 10 days.
